Explaining Who You Are as An Empath

A question that often comes up on my blog, and on Facebook, is how to better explain to others who we are as Empaths. Although I have written about the subject in the past, I feel it’s a good time to revisit the topic because it can be such a frustrating part of Empath life.

When we awaken to our Empath ways everything we’ve experienced emotionally and physically, when around people, finally makes sense. We understand our need for time alone, why we feel such crazy energy when in busy places, and why we experience such overpowering emotions when with certain people. We come to accept our ‘inner knowing’ as the incredible guiding force it is and stop fighting or ignoring the intuition that comes with it.

We often become so excited by our newfound knowledge that we want to tell the world. We have an explanation for all the inexplicable things we’ve experienced, throughout life, and we now know we are not the only ones. However, we quickly come to discover that discussing the ways of an Empath is no easy feat. Learning who we are, it would seem, was the easy part of the journey.

Oh, we may try to explain what we now know about our traits to others. The reasoning behind our Empath ways is so simple, why wouldn’t anyone else understand? But when we try to describe ourselves it doesn’t always go the way we hoped. And when we see others struggling to comprehend our explanations it causes us more frustration. We may then try to overexplain ourselves, struggling to find the key words to convince the other of our validity. Yet the more details we give the more discouraged we become. Sadly, the reason people don’t hear is not just because they don’t understand but because, too often, their ears are closed to the subject.

Although we like to believe we live in a world of free speech, opinion and thought it is clearly not the case (although, I believe it is changing for the better. Tends to get worse before better). We regularly see those who don’t follow the herd, or agree with the majority, attacked or ridiculed. So, it is hardly surprising some Empaths fear talking openly about who they are. People can be very closed-minded as well as fearful of acknowledging the minority. And it doesn’t help that the greatest prisons we live in is the fear of what others think of us.

If you’ve been an awakened Empath for some years you will no doubt already know that explaining to others, about who we are and what we feel, can be a gruesomely tricky area. Most Empaths quickly come to realize that the subject of being ‘Sensitive’ to energy and the emotions of others is just too ‘out there’ for some to consider.

The distinct lack of interest, shown by those closest to us, may come as a surprise to the newly awakened Empath. But the longer you walk this weird and wonderful path the more sense it makes. For one thing, we often do not know our friends as well as we’d like to think we do. And just because we are ready to accept who we are does not mean they are.

Although it may be difficult to admit, not all friends, or family members, have our best interests at heart. Everyone has faces they show the world and in friendships it is no different. Some friends cover up unpleasant traits, for their own reasons, but when faced with certain revelations—perhaps when we explain ourself as an Empath—their true colours are often shown. Even if they don’t verbalise their dismay, at our disclosures, we always sense a lack of acceptance or a quiet rejection, even at it’s most subtle. Continue reading

The Word is Spreading

This morning I was happy to find in my inbox a newsletter from the renowned Dr. Judith Orloff, stating she had recently gone gluten and sugar free, and she recommended this way of eating to other Empaths. I felt quite excited by the fact word is clearly spreading about the importance of addressing the diet to find complete balance, health and happiness as an Empath.

I have written about the benefits of changing the diet for some years now, after seeing the changes in myself when I removed certain foods from my diet. Not only in my health but to my Empath ways. The wrong diet will affect your spiritual awareness and prevent intuition from developing, it also heightens the impact of other people’s energy and emotions, and hinder one’s ability to find inner calm, happiness and health… something we all need to experience in our life now. The thing is, until you make the necessary changes to your diet you won’t see how foods, like wheat and sugar, are affecting you.

Here is a short extract explaining how the Empath’s weakened aura (energy-field) can impair their quality of life:

The Empath Aura

Your aura emanates around you like a luminous egg-shaped sheath. It extends around and away from the body for anything up to five feet (in a healthy person). The vibration of this energetic frame is fine and subtle.

Those who are unhealthy, in their body and mind, have an unhealthy, receded aura which is also permeable (energy leaks out and in).

Our aura both surrounds and penetrates our body and resonates with both our physical and mental bodies. Years’ worth of data is stored within our energy-field; this information is normally an accumulation of happy and sad experiences, ideas and opinions, unreleased painful emotions, negative thought-forms, past life memories and toxins, etc. Because Empaths pick up energy from others, we can also carry inside our aura their negative thought-forms and energy.

A weakened body and mind weakens our aura. Low-level thoughts and emotions, unbalanced chakras, food intolerances, poor diet, drugs and alcohol all impair the body, and anything that debilitates the body damages our aura.

When the aura is damaged, it becomes leaky. This is bad news on many levels: it allows our energy out (causing fatigue and other imbalances), and admits other people’s energy in, which then merges with our own.

Empaths are known to have a permeable aura, and this is why people’s energy can be so debilitating. But they are not the only ones. Anyone who is unhealthy or with emotional issues possess a weakened energy-field, which means their energy and emotions are also able to leak out.

If an Empath comes into close proximity with those who have a leaky aura, they will soak up anything leaked like a super-absorbent sponge. It may appear that strangers’ energy purposely infringes our own, but it is often an energetic merger.

If you are unhealthy, eat an unsuitable diet, take drugs or stimulants, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, experience stress and have dark thoughts you will likely have a permeable aura. This means you pick the emotions and energy off others which then becomes etched within your energy-field. You are also affected by negative residual energy and other low frequency vibrations. The only way to heal the aura is by making some changes.

Experiencing overwhelm, after picking up a stranger’s emotional energy, often means the memory of it gets imprinted. Any future interactions, with unfamiliar energy, may cause something like an “energetic allergic reaction”. These reactions are draining and can leave us feeling well below par for hours or even days. If these responses become a common occurrence, following time spent in public places, it prevents us from fully participating in our own life. This is seen by avoidance of peopled areas and anything that involves social interaction.

By finding total balance of mind, body and spirit, it works something like an “energetic anti-histamine” for the Empath. A healthy body and mind results in a powerful aura and creates the Empath’s invisible armour.

A formidable aura empowers the Empath. It persuades other people’s energy to bounce off and is key to living a happier life.

We cannot expect our mind and spirit to be strong when we are putting something into the body that weakens it. Nor can we expect our body to be strong if we experience “Sensitivity stress”.

Sensitivity Stress

Empaths are Sensitive. Anyone who is Sensitive will experience overwhelming emotions, vivid thoughts, and they get hurt more easily than most. This can lead to Sensitivity stress which compromises the immune system… and eventually results in a damaged aura.

Sensitivity stress is endured by those who experience other people’s emotional pain and energy as an adverse reaction (feeling drained, experiencing negative emotion or becoming unwell), they also overreact to any emotional situation and are prone to having anxiety or panic attacks.

This type of stress is not caused by having deadlines to work to and a mammoth to-do-list (although they certainly won’t help), it is caused by having a Sensitive nature, being overly stimulated from external energy and/or having buried emotional pain. Just like normal stress, it damages the immune system and puts strain on the mind and body. This in turn leads to illness, rampant negative thoughts, and a weakened aura…

So there you go a sneaky peak at what The Empath Awakening is about.

19 Surprising Secrets Of An Empath

There are many layers to being an Empath, and the sooner we discover who we are, and come to understand our incredible traits, the better we can navigate life. However, many Empaths go through life not knowing who they are. Nor realizing some of their quirky ways are actually part and parcel of being Sensitive.

Most already know the usual traits of an Empath, but here is a list of some of the less discussed and recognized behaviours that sets the Empath apart (as well as a few of the better known ones – thrown in for good measure). It is often the case that by simply recognizing certain traits is enough to master them:

1. Possesses Emotional Intelligence

Empaths encompass incredible emotional intelligence, which they use to make careful decisions they hope will bring balance into their life and the lives of others. But as emotional intelligence is a rare gift, in a world ran by logic and rules, it can leave the Empath hurt and vulnerable by those who do not function or think in the same way.

2. Excellent Judge of Character

Sensing all they do about people and life situations makes the Empath an excellent judge of character. Their first impressions are always correct.

3. Senses Deep Emotional Energy

An Empath senses emotions intensely, both their own and others. But this ability can weaken the Empath, especially when it is emotional pain they feel. This is the opposite of who they know they are. Deep within they recognize they are here to do something special, but are often held back from finding their purpose by the confusion of what they experience emotionally.

4. Endures Empath Overwhelm

It is easy for an Empath to become overwhelmed without necessarily understanding the reason for it. They often look for ways to shelter from this overwhelm in vices such as alcohol or drugs. It may take time for the Empath to discover these substances have the opposite effect and make their pain more intense.

5 Easy Ways to Stop Empath Overwhelm

overwhelmEvery Empath experiences it at some point and it is one of the most challenging aspects of being Sensitive. The overwhelm endured, from taking on too much emotional energy, can  at times be unbearable.

Empath overwhelm is often caused by being “peopled”. But being around crowded places or overly negative people is not the only way an Empath becomes overwhelmed.

When someone has caused hurt, by their words or actions, or if the Empath has had negative thoughts directed towards them  it often throws them completely off-balance, sending them nose-diving into overload. And that is not to mention what they suffer from being in the firing line of another’s low-mood.

The more out of alignment the Empath (feeling run down, emotionally low, having unbalanced chakras and hormones, etc.) the worst they will be affected by overwhelm and the longer it will last.

Empath overwhelm affects everyone differently, some much worse than others, at different stages of life. It causes lethargy, apathy and mood swings, and can  trigger thoughts that keep you awake at night and dark emotions that reduce  your verve for life.

The best way to combat the impact of overwhelm is to ‘nip it in the bud’ as soon as you become aware of it. The following techniques work quickly to stop Empath overwhelm in its tracks:

1. Eat a small amount of chocolate: I say small amount because large amounts have the opposite effect (I discovered this the delicious way, by devouring too much).

Chocolate can transform and uplift oyur mood in an instant. Containing compounds which promote happiness, chocolate is the go-to food when you have been emotionally or energetically triggered.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, produced by eating chocolate, known as the happy hormone. This hormone not only activates your bliss centers but it also helps refrain you from dipping into dark thoughts.

In my opinion, milk chocolate tends to work better than dark (as dark chocolate has a higher amount of caffeine). But the type you choose is something you can experiment with yourself. Most chocolate contains refined sugar which is a big cause of depression, and inflammation, not just in Empaths but all humans. So keep chocolate just for the times when you’ve been hit by emotional overload.

Eat between 2 to 4 small squares of chocolate, washed down with a pint of cool water. The water speeds up the healing and re-balancing process. 

2. Temple hold: Place two to three fingers on either side of the temples (between the eyebrows and hairline) and hold for as long as needed.

This simple technique helps break the repetitive thoughts that are triggered from emotional pain and overwhelm. It also works to block the dense feelings they cause.

I’m not sure why this method works but it does. (I suspect it is because it activates acupressure points and soothes the parts of the brain responsible for emotions.) It makes one feel safe and helps contain any excess ‘head energy’.

Great to do at bedtime, when emotional overwhelm turns into rampant thoughts that keep you awake. Taking some calming, conscious breaths at the same time further helps.

3. Short burst of high intensity exercise: A mini power-walk or run, dynamic yoga moves, dance routines or skipping, etc.  helps burn off raging or uncomfortable emotions. I’m talking very doable bursts of exercise that last between 1 to 5 minutes.

Performing short bursts of high intensity exercise releases endorphins into the body which block the pain transmission signals and produce euphoric feelings that calm the entire system.

A great exercise I use, when I have been emotionally fired-up, is the plank. Most will have heard of the plank; it is a challenging yoga move that activates all the muscles in the body. Maintaining it for just 30 seconds is often all it takes to blast out any negative energy.

There is a variation of the plank to do whatever your fitness level, from beginners and beyond. You will find plenty of excellent instructional videos on YouTube to get you started.

Whatever exercise you choose, as your mini blast, make sure to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable and your muscles burn. (The saying ‘fight fire with fire’ springs to mind here).

4. Singing: This may not be something you want to do when feeling low, but it is excellent for lifting the moods. Sound affects you on many levels and singing raises your vibration and can stop emotional overwhelm in its tracks.

Anyone can sing, hum or chant, even whistling works. Just make sure the song you chose is uplifting and not one that stokes up painful emotional memories.  Try it and see.

5. Avoid caffeine: Being a stimulant, caffeine will heighten any emotional overwhelm you are experiencing. You don’t always realize how caffeine worsens your emotions because the effects kick in 30 to 40 minutes after consumption.  It can make you anxious and jittery and anything you feel negatively inside is amplified. Not having caffeine will not always prevent emotional overload but it significantly reduces the symptoms and the way it affects you.

Developing the Empath’s Powerful Solar Intuition

Empaths have a strong sense of intuition. It is part of who they are and serves them in many ways. Their intuitive antenna is always ‘on’ sensing what is right or wrong in their world.

Understanding how to read their intuition is incredibly beneficial for any Empath. And, to discover how to do this, they need to become better acquainted with their gut sensations.

The “feelings” within the gut, or  solar plexus region, are coming from what is known as the second brain. The sensations come from the enteric nervous system, a network of neurons lining the gut, and responsible for the “butterflies” felt in the stomach area.

Science now recognizes what ancient yogis discovered hundreds of years ago: that the emotions are influenced by the gut nerves.

Everyone feels excitement fear and nervousness in the gut area, but the Empaths feel it so much more.

Is the Empath Really an Introvert Narcissist?

Contrary to the title of this post, I am not suggesting that Empaths are in fact covert introvert narcissists. The title was just to grab your attention. The reason being, last week an article came to my attention that made me stop in my tracks and was the cause for a lengthy conversation with myself about the traits of a narcissist and how they could be confused with the traits of an Empath.

As you read on you will understand why I felt the need to write this post and address this subject.

There is much written about Empaths and narcissists and the toxic relationships that can result from these encounters. But I have had many comments on my site (which I don’t publish if they are overly negative or attacking) comparing Empaths to narcissists and this is why I would like to address the, subject.

Narcissism is defined as a psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation and incredibly high self-esteem with a distinct lack of empathy.

The origin of narcissism stems from the myth of Narcissus, the youth from ancient Greece who fell in love with his own reflection in the water, only to drown in the process.

Don’t Like What You See? Look a Little Closer… The Mirror of the Empath

We have all experienced it, being around someone who has either taken an instant dislike to us, or a bizarre resentment suddenly appears in those we have known for some time.

We may have no idea why another feels this way, as we have not given them reason to have such repugnance towards us. No matter whether they try to hide their feelings or not, an Empath can sense their loathing and it does not feel good!

Someone taking a dislike to another is a completely normal and acceptable part of life. We are all different and there will always be some people we do not get along with, whether Sensitive or not.

What is often baffling to the Empath is why some people act in an animostic way towards them, when they know they are a likeable and trustworthy person.

Are You A Multipotentialite Empath?

Feeling confused as to whether we are walking the ‘right occupational path’ is all too common for the Sensitive. There are many reasons for this, but the way the world makes us ‘feel’ certainly contributes to this confusion.

Because we get exhausted, depressed or overstimulated by spending too much time around others, it leads to feelings of unfulfillment, which we often blame on our chosen profession.

This sense of unfulfillment may push us towards trying many different vocations,  in the hope it will put us on the path to our ‘true’ life-purpose.

Empaths are hardwired into learning, gaining knowledge and wisdom. They have active imaginations and look for ways to fill their creative-mind-space. Are you an Empath or HSP?

 

The definitions between an Empath and a highly sensitive person (HSP) are so similar that some may question as to which camp they fall in. Hopefully, after reading this you may have a better idea.

Here are some of the type of questions Elaine N. Aron uses in her book, ‘The Highly Sensitive Person’, to decide a HSP:

The Powerful Grounding, Protecting and Mirroring Properties of Haematite

They are drawn to crystals for many reasons, but especially for their beauty, texture, colour and the powerful vibrations they emit.

There are hundreds of different types of crystals all with countless healing properties but today I am focusing on one stone that, for very good reason, I’ve been drawn to lately…Haematite.

What’s the Deal with Antiques and Empaths?

On my post ‘At a Glance 30 Traits of an Empath’ there is one trait that has caused some controversy over the years and that is:

Trait 28   Will not choose to buy antiques, vintage or second-hand. 

Anything that’s been pre-owned carries the energy of the previous owner. An Empath may even prefer to have a brand new car or house (if they are in the financial situation to do so) with no residual energy.

Many people wrongly assume the reason number 28 is on the list is because antiques hold negative energy. Anything pre-owned can carry negative or positive energy but this is not the reason it is on the list. Continue reading

Why Empaths Freeze Around Inauthentic People

Ever spent time with someone who on the surface seem as nice as pie but when with them you feel awful and struggle to form a sentence? This is a caused by your Empathic antenna sensing all is not what it seems. You are detecting that what this person is showing is a fake persona created to hide something from others.

When an Empath comes across fake people it is common for them to shut down as a form of protection.  This can be seen as stumbling over words or one’s memory and thought process being affected. Anyone who is not emanating truthful vibes will put an Empath on high alert.
