The Controlling Force of Emotions

Continuing on from my last post, where I discussed how being in jobs that do not feel like a fit can lead to depression, as can feeling directionless or out of control in one’s life. Today, I want to further address the subject of feeling a power imbalance as an Empath and a need to control what we feel.

When out of balance or out of control, as an Empath, many of our emotional sensations are amplified. We become oversensitive to everyday life situations and get hurt easily. We may suffer more with depression and are open to attract depressive moods from others (like attracts like).

In my post: Why do Empaths have Such a Strong Sense of Belonging, I made reference to Empaths knowing when something is wrong in their surroundings, even if they don’t know exactly what it is. The fact that so few people have control over their lives makes for a lot of unhappy people. Empaths pick up on the collective sense of dissatisfaction in the populace, which can bring them down. This can then also hold them back from their own forwards momentum.

As Empaths, we get down when it seems like we have no control of the way we feel. Which is understandable. Getting bombarded with the emotional energy of others (on top of our own emotions) is no fun and it can certainly influence the way we operate as humans and Empaths.

What we pick up from others can shape our life, especially if we are not aware the emotional energy we are experiencing does not belong to us. (If you struggle with defining the emotional energy of others read this.)

But other people’s energy is not the only thing that can lead to emotional instability and a sense of ‘no life-control’. Continue reading

When Someone’s Energy Acts as a Trauma Trigger for an Empath & Ways to Prevent it

adult alone anxious black and whiteContinuing from my last post, about how residual energy impacts the Empath, today I want to share how a person’s residual energy can trigger an Empath.

As mentioned in my last post, residual energy is a trail of energy that is often left behind by a person who holds a lot of negativity. It can also be created when a conflict has occurred in a certain place. Residual energy can also be powerfully uplifting but that rarely causes problems for an Empath.

So how does dark residual energy affect an Empath..? Well, when left by a a person, it can seep into their energy field and influence their thoughts and moods for days after being picked up.

When filled with powerful negative emotions, anyone and everyone can leave a trail of dark lingering energy. But those who energy affect the Empaths in the most painful ways are the people who act as Emotional Trauma Triggers (ETTs).

A trauma trigger is an event from the past that can trigger a reaction, such as anxiety or fear, in the present. But even residual energy, left by someone who caused you emotional pain in the past ( or those who carry the same energy signature), can become an emotional trauma trigger.

How do you know if someone is an emotional trauma trigger?

Generally, the mere mention of an ETT’s name is enough to ignite an unpleasant emotional response. But the worst reaction happens when you have spent time with them and their residual energy has seeped into your own energy body.

Signs you have been triggered by residual energy:

  • Your mind keeps going back to that person in a negative way
  • You start re-living a long-forgotten injustice from your past
  • You feel uninspired or lethargic
  • It feels like you are experiencing psychic attack
  • You experience waves of bitterness, anger or irritability (when you don’t normally carry those traits)
  • You feel dissatisfied or unfulfilled
  • Your sleep is affected
  • You don’t feel like your usual self
  • You suffer with many niggling physical complaints

The Incredible Benefits of Garlic for the Empath

We all know that garlic keeps the blood-sucking vampires away but what about the vampires the Empath dreads being in the presence of…the energy vampires? Sadly, it may not be powerful enough to keep the latter away but it will certainly counteract any damage they cause, both physically and energetically.

Garlic is an amazing tool when it comes to healing the body; it is a powerful antibiotic, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory, it helps remove heavy metals and contains potent anti-oxidants that help build a healthy immune system.

For the Empath, however, it is what it can do for you energy body that you may find of interest:

Benefits of Relaxation for the Empath

The majority of Empaths have no idea how much tension they hold within their bodies.

Most unknowingly allow their muscles to stay in a constant state of contraction and because of this, even in sleep, they don’t fully relax… Which leads to extra Empath stress and overwhelm!

You may not realize, but your muscles are constantly stimulated, through the stresses of modern life and even through vigorous sports and exercise.

Even the TV programmes, watched of an evening to relax, have an effect of firing up the mind which stimulates the muscles, further tensing them.

Also, painful emotions, either your own or those you pick up from others, are stored within the muscles, leading to greater muscle fatigue.

Stressed muscles leads to a stressed Empath mind!

Even now, whilst reading this, you will be holding tension somewhere in your body.

If you take your awareness to your face you may notice that your forehead, jaw or eyes are not relaxed. But until this was pointed out to you, you were unaware of it. If you travel further into the body you may find your shoulders are hunched or your wrists are extended back, all creating pressure in the muscles and joints.

We could go through the entire body, but I think it’s safe to say you will be unwittingly holding tension somewhere.

When your muscles are constantly contracted, they are fuelling the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). Not only is this depleting the body of vital energy, that most can ill-afford to lose, but it is also prematurely ageing, it raises blood pressure and lowers the immune system.

In training the muscles to soften and loosen, through relaxation, it switches on the parasympathetic nervous system. This, in turn, slows the breathing, lowers blood pressure, initiates deep relaxation of body and mind, and allows healing to occur.

In yoga, it is known that the relaxation, at the end of a class, is the most beneficial part of the practice. Not only is it time for the body to rest but it’s the time the benefits of practise are fully integrated.

The best way to get a muscle to relax is to tense it first. Here is an excellent and easy way to relax the body in no time.

  • Lie on the floor or a bed (for anyone suffering back problems: a bolster or cushion under knees is helpful).
  • Starting at the feet, tense them for five to ten seconds then release.
  • Work up through limbs, torso and face, tensing and relaxing each body part in turn (great if you can’t sleep) and then, when you’ve tensed each body part, allow yourself to let go.
  • Go through each body part and allow it to relax and go floppy
  • Stay for a while in this deep state of stillness.

If time is short, you could do the lower part of body first, then upper half, finishing on the face.

Not only does the above exercise promote relaxation but it also aids in stilling the mind.

Relaxation can be done at any anytime of day but it is great to do at bedtime or after exercise.

If, as an Empath, you suffer any kind of chronic fatigue doing full-body muscle resting is a great help to your overall well-being.

  • Reduces fatigue
