Connecting the Dots of Empath Life

We don’t always realize it, but life is a series of linked events; each one leading to the next, like the spots on a dot-to-dot puzzle. Yet, most are unaware that the seemingly random occurrences, of daily life, are in any way pivotal to the course of our destiny.

A chance meeting that happened 10 years ago may bring about an incredible job offer tomorrow, or a difficult situation endured in our teens may have helped us cope with an incident in our forties.

But because our mind is kept so busy trying to make sense of life’s conundrums,  we are often kept from connecting the dots on our unique and mysterious life puzzle.

Our Empath sensitivities and busy or stressed minds also prevent us from seeing how amazing our lives really are.

The majority of us work hard trying to figure out life. We may wonder where our true purpose lies or we may constantly find ourselves looking at ways to fit into this crazy old world and balance our emotions.

Sadly, much of our present life is missed because we are stuck focused on negative issues or our mind skips off into the future searching for ways to find happiness.

It is as though our happiness lies only in the future or in tomorrow’s achievements…

It’s funny how we have been programmed to think our happiness lies in our successes.  We are led to believe our future goals, will bring us our deserved and long sought after happiness.

But how many of our life accomplishments came and went without being enjoyed or celebrated? Probably not too many. Was that because they did not bring with them the feelings of completion or fulfilment we expected?

You’ve probably already passed exams, got the job you applied for, bought the car or home, travelled the world, found a partner, enjoy financial stability, had children… In fact, when you stop and look at how much you’ve already achieved in life,  you will see there’s been a lot to celebrate… So, if true contentment comes with our accomplishments shouldn’t we be ecstatic?

So why do so many of us feel disconnected or dissatisfied with our lives? It may certainly seem that the Empath is destined to got through life feeling unfulfilled or overwhelmed, and that happiness is a destiny that belongs to someone else. But I know that does not have to be the case.

Yes, there are many things that come with being an Empath that make life difficult: getting hurt easily, feeling other’s emotional pain and often being a beacon for negativity. Yet all the difficulties we endured have built an incredible resilience and strengthened us in ways we cannot begin to imagine.

It is easy to forget that we came here for a reason: to experience life as an Empath and the many challenges that go with it. Because it can certainly be a challenging path to walk. It is often strenuous, painful, overly emotional and sometimes lonely. But it is also enlightening, invigorating and electrically charged and, when we allow ourselves to see it, a true gift!

We just need to change our perspective. As an Empath we can boast of life experiences that few can expect to have. We feel things others don’t and we have a strong sense of intuition that will take us to all the right places, if we allow it.

Sometimes, we purposely make life more difficult for ourselves, without realizing. And sometimes we allow ourselves to wallow in self-pity or we get stuck in victim mentality. We may also subconsciously choose to ignore what we need to do to keep us safe and sane on our journey … but the keys to our happiness are always there for us to find, when we are ready. And we don’t have to wait, we can choose today to make it happen. A shift in our perspective is all it takes to change our whole outlook. It is, after all, only in the here and now where we get to experience true contentment but we have to choose it first.

To speak metaphorically, we are at the helm of our own ships on a vast ocean: steering through rough seas, riding the choppy waves and navigating through storms. Yet, we also sail through the blissfully still waters. But, when our minds are stuck in past traumas or in future worries we won’t get to see or appreciate these incredible moments as they unfold.

As an Empath, it is easy to see dark or challenging times as punishments but when we come through the other side we often find an incredible gift inside the experience.

The experiences we have as Empaths really are unique, and every difficulty we have endured and overcome has catapulted us forward, shaping the course of our life. Everything we have experienced has brought us to where we are now but it is up to us how we interpret and perceive our own reality. If we choose only to see the dark that is all we will know.

When we connect the dots of our past we  see a bigger picture emerge, everything happens for a reason, and when we focus on the silver lining we will always see it. We can choose.

Have You Been Affected by The Eclipse?

Whilst writing a post about ways to explain yourself, as an Empath, I had an overwhelming feeling that I should make a side note about the strange sensations some of you may have endured for the past month, since the solar eclipse in the USA. So, what started off as a few lines about the strange aftereffects quickly grew into several paragraphs and, for that reason, I have decided to put this out as a mini post on its own—with the originally intended post to follow in due course.

I don’t tend to write much about the effects of earth energies or solar phenomena, because there are many others far better versed on the subject than I. But, as the aftershocks of last month’s solar eclipse (which is still ongoing) has left many Sensitive folk reeling, I thought it a good idea to mention some of the symptoms you may have undergone… in case any of you are thinking you are going slightly cuckoo.

So here goes: Last month’s solar eclipse has bought up some intense emotions in people and may have also triggered waves of lethargy and a lack of inclination towards doing anything—especially usual routines.

If you have experienced unusual fatigue and a ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude towards most things, since the eclipse, it is probably a good idea to give into it and allow yourself to rest as much as possible. Put off what you don’t need to do and allow yourself guilt-free respite.  Continue reading

Should the Empath Become Vegetarian?

There is much debate within the Empath world as to whether meat should be consumed. Many Empaths find themselves naturally drawn to vegetarianism, even from a young age. Some even become strict vegans, others may eat only chicken or fish. However, as each Empath is affected differently by their consumption of meat, chicken and fish it is a choice they have to make for themselves as to whether they consume.

The majority of Empaths will question their meat intake at some point on their journey, even if they like the taste. And this often comes down to their love and respect for nature and the animal kingdom, as well as the fact that consuming animals just feels  wrong.

It has to be said, we live in a barbaric world where animals eat animals, fish eat fish, and insects eat insects to survive… and yes, humans eat animals (and, in some rare cases, other humans). But these days more people, and not just the Sensitive, are choosing to stop eating meat because of the way animals are treated.

It is not just because of their love of animals that turns the Empaths away from eating meat, whether they realize this or not, it’s often because they feel the energy of an animal when they eat its meat. Some are so Sensitive that they can even feel the energy of an egg and will avoid eating them too.

If an animal suffered or felt much fear before being slaughtered, it can cause depression and low emotions in the Empath who consumes its meat. The bigger the animal the more this energy is felt. These emotions are normally experienced soon after consumption, within minutes or hours. One may feel weepy, sorrowful, irritation or experience waves of anger. You may even find yourself more sensitive to the energy of your surroundings. That said, some are little affected. It really depends on one’s level of Sensitivity and the type of animal produce. For example: some Empaths may eat chicken or fish and feel no ill-effects, but if they eat meat, derived from a cow or pig, it greatly affects their moods.

It is probably safe to say, should you develop low emotions soon after eating meat, avoidance may be the best option for you as an Empath.

I eat chicken and fish, and very little meat. I would prefer to be vegetarian, and for some time I was, but it didn’t suit my health. I have autoimmune and a leaky gut, which I can control through my diet. I find most vegetarian proteins cause a negative bodily reaction (even avocados). And because of the environment I live in, I tend to stay overly responsive.

Leaky gut and autoimmune disease are conditions common among Sensitive people. After experiencing a lifetime’s worth of heightened emotions and sensitivities, the gut, which is the area of the seat of emotions, weakens. Couple that with the amount of chemicals in our atmosphere and diet, and the foods that have been genetically altered, makes us vulnerable to developing physical and energetic weaknesses.

In brief, if you suffer with a leaky gut, the lectins in many vegetarian foods trigger a reaction that allows food particles, that should stay inside the gut, to leak out into the body. This causes an immune response. When this happens regularly it eventually leads to an autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks the organs and glands. For the Empath, this opens another can of worms, igniting unbalanced chakras and a leaky aura.

Should you choose to eat meat, fish, chicken, or even dairy products, as an Empath you are best eating the finest quality organic, pasture-raised produce. Not only because the animals will have been better looked after but because of the amount of chemicals pumped into most livestock.

Over 80% of all produced antibiotics are given to livestock. And up to 20 different medications and vast quantities of hormones could be present in non-organic meat and dairy. The antibiotics and hormones found within animal produce are causing humans many health problems. They are known to be endocrine disruptors. And anything which is an endocrine disruptor upsets the balance of hormones within the body. This in turn disrupts the health of the chakras and weakens the Auric field (meaning you pick up more energy from others).

So, as already noted, should you choose to eat animal produce it is probably best to consume the finest quality.  The last thing you want, as an Empath, is  your diet to destabilize your aura and debilitate your chakras (You may want to read this post on how unbalanced chakras can destroy the Empath). Empath life already comes with enough hurdles as it is.

9 Reasons Why the Empath Should Avoid Negative People

There is no denying it, ‘people stress’ exists. Every one of us has experienced it. And I have no doubt we will have caused people stress to others at some point in our lives. But there are some who seem to prefer living under a dark cloud and make an occupation out of unpleasantness; they talk malevolently of people, places and pastimes and suck the joy out of life… These are the negative people of the world

Science has acknowledged that just by spending too much time around those who are constantly disapproving or miserable can have an undesirable influence on one’s health and happiness.

There are many studies showing how prolonged ‘people stress’ alters gene expression within the immune system… Meaning: we can become sick just by hanging out with angry, gloomy or demoralizing people.

Some doctors now even recommend their patients avoid spending time with those who cause them emotional stress; for the fact they could exacerbate health conditions.

It may seem unkind to suggest avoiding negative people, but here are 9 reasons why you should:

1, Low Moods are Triggered by Emotional Contagion:

Emotional contagion is the phenomenon of having one person’s emotions and linked behaviours trigger similar emotions in others. Meaning: Negativity is contagious.

You can experience other people’s low moods just by spending time with them.

2, You Become a Magnet for Negativity:

Ever wondered why after spending time around negative people you draw more negative situations towards you?

Like attracts like.

When you unintentionally harvest other people’s negativity, through emotional contagion, it often becomes your own. Through the law of attraction, you then attract more.

Negativity breeds negativity!

3, You Experience an Energy Drain:

You may have noticed that when you spend time around negative people you feel cloudy, flat and lethargic.

Most negative people are also energy vampires. Their negativity sucks the energy from you, even after a short time spent in their presence. This drain can leave you feeling low, uninspired and weary.

4, Negative People Contribute to Inflammation:

Stress causes inflammation in the body.

Chronic inflammation has been linked to autoimmune disorders, depression, heart disease and even cancer.

By keeping negative people in your life, who cause you stress, you are causing your body more damage than you know.

5, The Adrenal Gland Weakens:

Although every organ is affected by people stress, the adrenals are one of the first to be impacted.

The adrenals are part of the endocrine system and are responsible for releasing the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline.

When the adrenals are functioning properly, cortisol is anti-inflammatory, otherwise it has the opposite effect.

By spending time around negative people it causes excessive stress which activates the fight-or-flight system. This system is supposed to keep you safe from harm, giving you the energy to run away or stay and do battle… but there is no danger just people stress. This happening repeatedly not only weakens the adrenals but inhibits the proper release of cortisol and impairs health.

6, Weight Gain:

If you are Sensitive and spend a lot of time around stress-inducing people, your adrenals become impaired, which – as mentioned above – plays havoc with cortisol production and can lead to weight gain.

As well as being known as the stress hormone, cortisol is also referred to as the fat storing hormone.

The weight gain, caused by excess cortisol production, is often seen around the stomach – and a reason many Empaths have a squidgy, pot belly. This fat is difficult to eliminate because it is not caused by eating too much food and so, reducing food intake has little effect on it.

7, Imbalanced or Blocked Chakras

Chakras are also known as energy centres.

The chakras are directly linked to your endocrine glands (glands that release hormones into the body), and people stress is known to impair the endocrine glands.

When any endocrine gland weakens (adrenals for example), it has a knock-on-effect and leads to unbalanced chakras.

Blocked or unbalanced chakras cause many health problems and can also lead to leaky aura syndrome (a problem many Empaths struggle with).

8, Weakened Energy Field:

Also known as the aura or pranic sheath, your energy field emanates around you like a luminous egg-shaped sheath.

The energy field has been defined as a haze or ‘metamolecular space’ that surrounds every living thing.

A healthy energy field keeps good energy in and bad energy out. A weak energy field, however, is porous and leaky – also known as leaky aura syndrome – and allows in too much energy from others.

If you become overly stressed or anxious, when around negative people, you are more at risk of developing a permeable aura. This can cause many unnecessary difficulties in life.

A weakened aura is bad news on many levels for the Empath (see this post to learn more) and by staying away from negative people it will help keep your energy field healthy.

9, Unhappiness and Depression:

It is difficult to stay upbeat when around anyone who drags you down emotionally.

Sensitive people are prone to low moods and depression and for this – and all the above reasons – the best way to stay happy is by avoiding nasty or unpleasant people.

If you experience guilt at the prospect of avoiding certain negative people, remind yourself you are looking after your health and wellbeing… You deserve to be happy and healthy!

Remedies

Because complete avoidance of negative people is near impossible, I have included 3 quick recovery remedies that aid relaxation and help switch on the parasympathetic nervous system (system responsible for bringing calm and balance to the body).

Take a Salted, Magnesium, Essential Oil Bath: This is an incredible combination for instilling calm and overall balance. Salt clears negative energy, it also heals and softens the skin.

Magnesium helps one relax, and boosts energy, supports the endocrine system and aids sleep (quality sleep is essential for repairs).

Choosing an essential oil, such as lavender, further supports deep relaxation.

Still the Mind and Calm the Breath: When stressed or anxious the breathing becomes erratic and thoughts go into overdrive, this only serves in heightening stress and weakens the body.

To quieten the mind, sit comfortably in a darkened room, with incense or your favourite essential oil burning, and practice alternate nostril breathing. This breathing technique brings instant serenity and quietens a chaotic mind.

Get Outdoors: An effortless way to restore balance is by simply stepping out in nature (read more here), or by using a technique called Earthing (read more here).

Why the Unusual Empath Reaction to Inauthenticity?

 

Empaths have a strong sense of integrity. They know they shouldn’t lie for personal gain, or to manipulate others, and although they strive towards living their truth, it is difficult to do when the world is filled with such dishonesty and corruption.

We are living in a time where silver-tongued fraudsters, who spin twisted webs of deceit, are rewarded for their outspoken dishonesty, and those who speak their truth often get attacked. And because of this, many end up living in a state of cognitive dissonance.

Whilst the world is awash with such hyped propaganda and disinformation, something will always feel off to the Empath. Continuous lies causes conflict and chaos within the Empath psyche, and the current global deceptions is a reason many are struggling to accept, or find, their roles in life.

But it’s not just living under a disingenuous, power-corrupt establishment that creates imbalance within the Empath, simply being in the presence of inauthenticity throws them into disarray

When in the company of those whose words don’t match their vibrational energy, the Empath brain tends to scramble. So much so, they struggle to form a coherent sentence when in their presence.

This mind-numbing effect is caused by the ‘Empathic antenna’ sensing all is not what it seems. It is detecting a person not showing the true reflection of who they are.

In most cases, when someone creates a fake persona, it is a way to hide a side they believe will be rejected. Every human wants to feel special and loved. And if someone feels unworthy, they may create a fake side they hope will be accepted.

But inauthenticity breeds and feeds. And an initial quest to ‘fit in’ can escalate, over time, into a darker manipulative personality.

When an Empath encounters inauthentic people they may, initially, assume it is their own insecurities creating the unusual ‘freeze effect’ they experience. But what is really happening is a brain scramble caused by contradictory energy.

This morning I was happy to find in my inbox a newsletter from the renowned Dr. Judith Orloff, stating she had recently gone gluten and sugar free, and she recommended this way of eating to other Empaths. I felt quite excited by the fact word is clearly spreading about the importance of addressing the diet to find complete balance, health and happiness as an Empath.

Here is a short extract explaining how the Empath’s weakened aura (energy-field) can impair their quality of life:

The Empath Aura

Your aura emanates around you like a luminous egg-shaped sheath. It extends around and away from the body for anything up to five feet (in a healthy person). The vibration of this energetic frame is fine and subtle.

Those who are unhealthy, in their body and mind, have an unhealthy, receded aura which is also permeable (energy leaks out and in).

Our aura both surrounds and penetrates our body and resonates with both our physical and mental bodies. Years’ worth of data is stored within our energy-field; this information is normally an accumulation of happy and sad experiences, ideas and opinions, unreleased painful emotions, negative thought-forms, past life memories and toxins, etc. Because Empaths pick up energy from others, we can also carry inside our aura their negative thought-forms and energy.

A weakened body and mind weakens our aura. Low-level thoughts and emotions, unbalanced chakras, food intolerances, poor diet, drugs and alcohol all impair the body, and anything that debilitates the body damages our aura.

When the aura is damaged, it becomes leaky. This is bad news on many levels: it allows our energy out (causing fatigue and other imbalances), and admits other people’s energy in, which then merges with our own.

Empaths are known to have a permeable aura, and this is why people’s energy can be so debilitating. But they are not the only ones. Anyone who is unhealthy or with emotional issues possess a weakened energy-field, which means their energy and emotions are also able to leak out.

If an Empath comes into close proximity with those who have a leaky aura, they will soak up anything leaked like a super-absorbent sponge. It may appear that strangers’ energy purposely infringes our own, but it is often an energetic merger.

If you are unhealthy, eat an unsuitable diet, take drugs or stimulants, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, experience stress and have dark thoughts you will likely have a permeable aura. This means you pick the emotions and energy off others which then becomes etched within your energy-field. You are also affected by negative residual energy and other low frequency vibrations. The only way to heal the aura is by making some changes.

Experiencing overwhelm, after picking up a stranger’s emotional energy, often means the memory of it gets imprinted. Any future interactions, with unfamiliar energy, may cause something like an “energetic allergic reaction”. These reactions are draining and can leave us feeling well below par for hours or even days. If these responses become a common occurrence, following time spent in public places, it prevents us from fully participating in our own life. This is seen by avoidance of peopled areas and anything that involves social interaction.

By finding total balance of mind, body and spirit, it works something like an “energetic anti-histamine” for the Empath. A healthy body and mind results in a powerful aura and creates the Empath’s invisible armour.

A formidable aura empowers the Empath. It persuades other people’s energy to bounce off and is key to living a happier life.

We cannot expect our mind and spirit to be strong when we are putting something into the body that weakens it. Nor can we expect our body to be strong if we experience “Sensitivity stress”.

Sensitivity Stress

Empaths are Sensitive. Anyone who is Sensitive will experience overwhelming emotions, vivid thoughts, and they get hurt more easily than most. This can lead to Sensitivity stress which compromises the immune system… and eventually results in a damaged aura.

Sensitivity stress is endured by those who experience other people’s emotional pain and energy as an adverse reaction (feeling drained, experiencing negative emotion or becoming unwell), they also overreact to any emotional situation and are prone to having anxiety or panic attacks.

This type of stress is not caused by having deadlines to work to and a mammoth to-do-list (although they certainly won’t help), it is caused by having a Sensitive nature, being overly stimulated from external energy and/or having buried emotional pain. Just like normal stress, it damages the immune system and puts strain on the mind and body. This in turn leads to illness, rampant negative thoughts, and a weakened aura…

So there you go a sneaky peak at what The Empath Awakening is about.

Are You a Morphing Empath?

Defining the Emotions an Empath Feels in Others

Learning to differentiate between ‘whose emotion belongs to whom’ certainly proves to be a challenge for those of a Sensitive disposition.

Every Empath quickly discovers of their ability to sense the emotional energy in others but some struggle to distinguish these emotions from their own.

I often get asked questions like: ‘How do I define what I feel in another person?’ or ‘How can I block the emotions I feel in others?’

Not understanding what other people’s emotions represent is more common than you might think within the Empath world.

When I was younger (teens and twenties), I did not know I could sense the emotions in others. I thought my own insecurities made me feel uneasy when around certain people. If anyone carried hidden pain, negative energy or anger issues I felt them as a deep sense of discomfort. Which I wrongly interpreted as being part of my own social hang-ups. Continue reading

Developing the Empath’s Powerful Solar Intuition

Empaths have a strong sense of intuition. It is part of who they are and serves them in many ways. Their intuitive antenna is always ‘on’ sensing what is right or wrong in their world.

Understanding how to read their intuition is incredibly beneficial for any Empath. And, to discover how to do this, they need to become better acquainted with their gut sensations.

The “feelings” within the gut, or  solar plexus region, are coming from what is known as the second brain. The sensations come from the enteric nervous system, a network of neurons lining the gut, and responsible for the “butterflies” felt in the stomach area.

Science now recognizes what ancient yogis discovered hundreds of years ago: that the emotions are influenced by the gut nerves.

Everyone feels excitement fear and nervousness in the gut area, but the Empaths feel it so much more.

Develop Empath Intuition

Practicing meditation is essential for developing Empath intuition!

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools an Empath can use for their personal growth. A committed daily practice serves in many ways. It strengthens the mind, body and spirit ad builds a powerful shield of protection.

Meditation also opens up the Empath’s intuition like nothing else.

Strong intuition requires a clean and clear mind. A cluttered, thought-filled mind will do nothing to help you grow or develop your Empath abilities.

Thoughts are addictive and difficult to break free from. However, when the mind is reset, through meditation, you can switch them off far easier.

When you have clarity of thought and a lucid mind, magical things happen.

Not only does meditation build intuition it also reprogrammes the brain into being able to better deal with negativity. This enables you to deal with the onslaught of thoughts, energy and emotions picked up from others.

Negative thoughts are destructive to health and wellbeing, especially when they are repetitive, and prevent the Empath from accessing their powerful intuition.

Empaths spend a lot of time in their heads. Which is great when thoughts are creative, happy or enlightening. However, spend too much time around certain people, or in certain places, and the happy thoughts quickly turn into painful memories, anger or thoughts of being wronged. This is why some type of meditation is crucial for the Empath.

Most Empaths find meditation incredibly difficult to get into because of their creative and over-active mind.

Perseverance is all that is needed.

Starting with a five-minute practice and building up into twenty to thirty minutes will reap incredible benefits.

I believe the best way to meditate is with an erect spine, either sitting in a straight-backed chair or in a comfy cross-legged or kneeling position on the floor. Keeping the spine straight and upright allows the energy to flow up and down and the breath to be calm.

There are some who will say lying down is a perfectly acceptable way to meditate, which it is but it is too easy to fall asleep when lying down and the opportunity to consciously quieten the mind is lost. Just make sure you feel comfortable before you start.

Regular meditation helps clear the mind of thoughts, fact! But thoughts always put up a big fight to stay centre stage. When you try to quieten the mind, the monkey living in your head is activated. Jumping from one random thought to another, the monkey mind is a challenge to still and for some it takes much more effort than for others (my monkey mind is like a hyperactive sugar-driven wild child).

It is at the point when they are about to make a breakthrough in meditation that many people give up, citing it as being too difficult. Yes, it is often difficult in the initial stages but nothing good comes easily.

Transformation does not happen over night, but it does not take long for you to see how a regular meditation practice is totally transformative and a fast-tracked way to developing greater intuition.

To see what amazing transformations are to be had by practicing meditation, set yourself a four-week challenge and allot an amount of time each day to practice.

I find mornings are easiest. Get up ten to twenty minutes earlier and start with five minutes meditation then gradually build up.

If you are on a time limit set a gentle alarm. It is amazing how quickly time will go once you are enveloped in your private mind sanctuary.

If you find meditation difficult it is always best to use a guided meditation until you have more control of your mind and thoughts. There are hundreds to choose from on YouTube. I have included one above and one at the bottom of the post, just to get you started (using earphones is always best with the guided mediations).

Before you start any guided meditation make sure you are compatible with the narrator’s voice. If you do not find the voice soothing then you may get irritated by it during the meditation, which is a distraction. Oh an make sure you won’t be disturbed.

Are you an Empath or HSP?

 

The definitions between an Empath and a highly sensitive person (HSP) are so similar that some may question as to which camp they fall in. Hopefully, after reading this you may have a better idea.

Here are some of the type of questions Elaine N. Aron uses in her book, ‘The Highly Sensitive Person’, to decide a HSP:

(The stronger you relate to the questions is an indication of your Sensitivity.)

  1. Are you aware of subtleties in your environment?
  2. Do other people’s moods affect you?
  3. Are you sensitive to pain?
  4. Do you need to withdraw if you are having a busy day?
  5. Are you sensitive to the effects of caffeine?
  6. Are you easily overwhelmed by strong smells, bright lights or loud noises?
  7. Do you have a rich and complex inner life?
  8. Are you conscientious?
  9. Do you startle easily?
  10. Are you aware how to make others feel more comfortable?
  11. Do you get frustrated if you are made to do too many things at once?
  12. Do you avoid watching violence on TV or in films?
  13. Do you become uncomfortable when a lot is going on around you?
  14. Do you avoid upsetting or overwhelming situations?

What is Smudging and How Can it Help Empaths?

burning sage sticksYou may have heard of ‘smudging’ but are not quite sure what it is or how it can help you as an Empath.

So what is smudging?

Basically, smudging is the practice of burning of herbs and using the smoke to remove negative energy from people, places or objects.

For the Empath, smudging can be a great tool. It is a quick and easy method to help remove negative energies picked up when being out and about in ‘peopled places’ or just to clear one’s energy field.

Smudging has been used for centuries all over the world. Today it is mainly associated with Native North Americans who use it in their healing ceremonies. However, many other countries burn herbs for cleansing:

In India they use incense, in Chinese acupuncture Mugwort is used, in Africa varied herbs are burnt, even the Christian Church burn herbs in their ceremonies. And although many of these actions have become ritualized, their basis stemmed from using smoke to remove negative energy. Continue reading
